In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling hills, dwelt a shepherd boy. His existence was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to care for his herd of rams.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind through the lone tree on the mountaintop were his only co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his charges inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.

But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plot.

Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.

One day he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw no wolf.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights here how trust once violated, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
